The demand for area rugs in residential spaces is on the rise. Area rugs are great for bringing a room together with their beautiful colors and abstract designs. Even if you have beautiful hardwood floors throughout your home, you may want a few area rugs and other accent pieces to really pull each room together.

There are, however, a few things that you will want to consider when purchasing the best type of rug for any room in your home. Continue reading to figure out how to choose a rug that will tie any room together perfectly.

What Is the Area Rug Made Of?

The material that a rug is made out of will determine where in the home you would use it. You will want to invest in a high-quality rug for the rooms that are frequently used or walked through. The rug needs to be durable while being easy to clean in order to withstand the tests of time.

Rugs that are made out of acrylic, wool, polypropylene, jute, or sisal are easy to maintain while enduring everyday use.

What Shape and/or Size Fit in the Space?

Make sure the size of the rug fits in the room without making it look unnatural. The rug needs to big enough for the area so that you don’t run into the floating rug issue where it’s too small to really tie the room together.

You will want to make sure that all of your selected furniture will either rest completely on, partially on, or completely off of the rug. If your area rug is not the right size, your setup may not flow together in the way that you had imagined.

You don’t have to stick with a rectangular rug. In fact, a square or round rug might fit into the concept of the room better than the traditional rectangular runner.

Consider the shape of a room before purchasing a rug for it. You wouldn’t want to put a square carpet in a room that runs long in dimension. Just as you wouldn’t place a long, rectangular rug in a square room. It just doesn’t work.

What Design or Color Are You Looking For?

When deciding on the color of your rug, you want to consider the other furniture and decorations in the room. You don’t want to choose a rug that is going to clash with the color scheme that is already in place.
