Metal Roof Materials

Different types of metal roofs can be made from steel, tin, zinc, copper, or aluminum. Each has its own pros and cons.

Aluminum is highly corrosive resistant, making it an ideal option for coastal areas. However, it can be very expensive. Copper is also very expensive. However, it is very durable.

Tin roofs aren’t as common as other roofing types, but they offer many of the same metal roof benefits.

Zinc is low maintenance and very recyclable, making it a more eco-friendly option than other materials. However, it is expensive.

Steel is affordable, durable, and comes in a few different options.

Galvanized steel uses a layer of zinc on top to reduce the risk of corrosion. Galvalume steel uses an aluminum and zinc combination. Weathering steel uses heavy metals to create an alloy, and is often used in major construction projects such as bridges.

Metal Roof Types

Regardless of the metal used, there are a few different types of metal roofing options. Some of the more popular ones include:

Shingles

Many homeowners may be hesitant to choose a metal roof. That primary reason maybe because of the appearance. Some people think metal roofs look either too industrial or too futuristic.

That’s where metal shingles come in as a viable option. They offer the perks of a metal roof, but with the appearance of traditional shingles. You still get a strong, durable, roof that withstands inclement weather and insects, but it looks like a traditional asphalt shingle.

Standing Seam

A standing seam metal roof consists of a paneled system. The panels are attached with concealed fasteners. Each panel has vertical legs or seams.

There are a lot of different options. Some can be attached to the roof decking using a nail or fastener flange.

However, most are attached using a clip that connects the panel to the roof decking. These panels are then connected to each other using batten, snap-lock, or mechanical seam options.

R-Panel

R-Panel roofing is a series of metal panels that have raised ribs. In between the ribs are flat areas.

R-Panel is cheaper than standing seam roofing. R-Panel metal panels are often used in commercial and industrial; buildings and are sometimes used as siding.
